๐ฎ Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is an inherited disorder of connective tissue with several clinical forms characterized especially by extremely flexible joints, elastic skin, and excessive bruising. It is a heritable disorder of connective tissue that is characterized by easy bruising, joint hypermobility (loose joints), skin laxity, and weakness of tissues and rightly abbreviated as EDS. โ Diagnosis : Extremely loose joints, fragile or stretchy skin, and a family history of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are often enough to make a diagnosis. Genetic tests on a sample of your blood can confirm the diagnosis in some cases and help rule out other problems. As we said earlier Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is an inherited condition that affects the connective tissues in the body. Connective tissue is responsible for supporting and structuring the skin, blood vessels, bones, and organs. Itโs made up of cells, fibrous material, and a protein called collagen. A group of genetic disorders cause Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which results in a defect in collagen production. There are a number of different types of EDS, each of which has these characteristic features. Each type of EDS affects different areas of the body. However, all types of EDS have one thing in common: "Hypermobility". Hypermobility is an unusually large range of movement in the joints. โ Symptoms : Symptoms include overly flexible joints that can dislocate, and skin that's translucent, elastic and bruises easily. In some cases, there may be dilation and even rupture of major blood vessels. People may experience pains in the joints or muscles. Some common symptoms are bleeding, double jointed, easy bruising, heart murmur, joint dislocation, muscle weakness, physical deformity, poor wound healing, or wrinkles. โ Features : Features of EDS include skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility, and tissue fragility. โ Potential Complications of EDS : ๐ Chronic joint pain ๐ Joint dislocation ๐ Early onset arthritis ๐ Slow healing of wounds, leading to prominent scarring ๐ Surgical wounds that have a hard time healing โ Treatment : Treatment options often involve physical therapy to promote joint stability and maintain muscle strength, pain medication, and treatment for associated symptoms. Acupuncture has also been beneficial for people with EDS to help reduce pain and fatigue and ease discomfort from headaches and sleep disturbances. โ Exercises : We have good evidence that exercise helps with hormonal control of estrogen, testosterone, progesterone and cortisol. It improves sleep cycles and the hormones involved in regulating our sleep patterns. It helps improve muscle mass and prevents the loss of bone density. Exercise participation is strongly correlated with reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression, and improvements in mood and the sense of well-being. Improvements in cognition, focus, and memory are also linked with exercise participation. There has been strong evidence demonstrating that unstable joints are improved with exercise and that exercise can reduce daily pain levels.
