PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN — Patellofemoral pain is a fairly non-specific diagnosis given to individuals experiencing pain at the front of the knee that is commonly attributed to weak glutes, tight quads, poor movement patterns or a combination of the three. — While it is often helpful, and recommended, to strengthen the hip and knee musculature (usually the glutes and quads) for individuals experiencing patellofemoral pain, it is only examining the diagnosis from a biological lens. — Rather than focusing on the patellofemoral joint in pain, it’s important to focus on the person with patellofemoral pain as it can be associated with “higher levels of anxiety, depression, catastrophization, and fear of movement”. — Now, we shouldn’t compartmentalize our treatment or rehab into biological, psychological, or social constructs. Instead, we should focus on how the experience of pain affects each person. — Modify the contributing factors that are modifiable. Strengthen the glutes and quads. Manage the load. Don’t INDUCE fear or anxiety by providing a nocebic narrative about how their tight/weak/broken _____ is the cause of all their problems. And consider how this pain is affecting their day to day life. Maybe they can’t play sports or walk their dog with their significant other. This is important information to tease out to help guide goals for rehab.
