✅CORRECTIVE REHAB✅ Many therapists use specific rehab exercises in a belief that they are more effective and superior than other forms of exercise. However, there is growing evidence that when it comes to many pains and pathologies our exercise interventions do NOT have to be as specific or ‘correct’ as we first thought. This is due to the multifactorial way that ALL exercise helps reduce pain via many different mechanisims. First is the distraction and refocus of attention away from pain onto the task of the exercise being done. Next are the complex effects of exercise induced hypoanalgesia (EIH) created by endogenous opioid release. Then there are other top down psychological pain inhibition effects such as fear exposure, expectancy violation, and even temporal summation and habituation. The belief that our rehab exercises help those with musculoskeletal pathology and pain by ONLY correcting biomechanical alignments or re-addressing imbalances is being challenged more and more. Exercise is our most effective highest value treatment for pain, not because its any better than anything else, but because it has a host of other beneficial side effects on physical and psychological health.
